ART IN SIGHT

Art Clubbers teamed with Jason Bruges Studios and Wildstone Capital to deliver an exciting outdoor exhibition in the heart of Shoreditch. Art In Sight is a project which turns the urban city area into a gallery by bringing art to the masses using technology and existing sites.

We took over the board which is usually used for marketing for a whole month! We recruited 7 artists, designers and illustrators from our alumni to take part. The works showcased area variety of photography, painting and digital art. We wanted to reflect the creative diversity London has to offer. It was vital that the artists selected reflected that diversity and were able to represent BAME and LGBT+ artists.

Every year 23 million people pass through the station, and it is open for 20 hours a day. Throughout out our month long campaign just over 2 million Londoners passed the board and witnessed it’s colourful glory!

Currently the site is going through some exciting changes which all began with a collaboration between TfL and Appear Here, a trendy short-term letting agency that works with pop-ups. Appear Here boss Ross Bailey and TfL’s head of retail, Stuart Anderson, at a Google conference hatched a plan to re-invent shops in stations and to start with Old Street. Bailey said this project was an opportunity “to give more independent entrepreneurs and start-up brands the chance to appear in these high-footfall destinations, and in front of such valuable audiences, and to seed surprises into the daily commute”.

Beyond the Binary is a celebration of queer bodies, queer spaces, and just the everyday embodiment of what it is to be queer. What is more exciting is that it is Black History month and we can celebrate black queer bodies and people in all their shapes and sizes through this piece and the other images on display.

Collaborating with Art Clubbers on Art In Sight was a great experience! They recruited a strong range of artists, all of who’s works represent not only the diversity of Shoreditch but London as a whole. The work was striking and varied. The artists themselves came from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sector - LGBT, BAME, Women - and worked in a range of mediums including illustration, painting and photography. Art In Sight was a project which really embodies Art Clubbers’ values and ethos by providing opportunities for budding makers, creators and doers to further their creative careers and allowing them to explore the different avenues they could take to establish fulfilling professions. This chimed really well with the values of the Shoreditch Digital Canvas and its commissioning body. It was also an absolute pleasure working with Ajay and team, who are without fail energetic, professional and great on detail.
