Mural unveiled outside Goodmayes station

WELCOME TO GOODMAYES

Welcome to Goodmayes is an exciting project aimed to get young people involved in the process of creating street art in the borough. Developing the ideas the young people have explored with the guidance from the local residents and surrounding areas, a street artist will create a mural which will reflect on the vibrancy and diversity of the local community. Through the overarching theme of creativity and togetherness, this project is an all in a bid to put Goodmayes on the map as an exciting destination.

This project brings together various groups of the community from young people to local residents as well as new and existing businesses. It anticipates the arrival of Cross rail - Its aim is to provide a high-frequency suburban passenger service crossing London from west to east, to be branded the Elizabeth line, by connecting two major railway lines terminating in London. This will be a first step to turning Goodmayes into a destination for architecture, art, commerce, cuisine, customs, geography, history, and people. Spotlighting Goodmayes as a hub for local enterprise, a safe place to live and an area bustling with rich culture and leisure.

Phase 1

In the first phase of the project, we worked with local young Redbridge residents to design and shape the mural. We launched a competition in partnership with surrounding schools and colleges for young people to submit their own street art concept designs.

We had been able to do community crowdfunding via Spacehive and Redbridge council’s community infrastructure levy. We also had received monetary sponsorship from Tesco, Hadley Property Group and Clairon Homes.

In summer 2021, as outreach for the competition, we have delivered 4 public workshops for local residents all led by a variety of local artists.

MEET MORGAN DAVY

After graduating at collage studying graphics & fine Art in 2007, Morgan instantly began exhibiting his work and in and around London, and has been branching out independently from that point, onwards.

Design Competition

The designs were then put to a public vote (a whopping 460 residents voted) and then finally judged by a panel formed by Redbridge Council and local businesses including Hadley Property Group.

Tahani, 13 year old Redbridge resident, was our design competition winner!

Redbridge is very diverse and this inspired me to draw people of
different backgrounds with their shirts spelling ‘Together’. This represent
us as a community and that we aspire to work, live and study together.
It’s interactive as people can stand infront of the painted people!
— Tahani, Design Competetion Winner

Phase 2

For the second phase of our project, we teamed up with international visual artist, Molly Hawkins who used the winning design as inspiration for the development of the final mural placed right outside Goodmayes Station!

MEet Molly Hawkins

Molly is a visual artist known for her large-scale and vibrant interventions in public spaces. Spreading joy, using the power of colour and pattern, she has painted bespoke Art in Poland, Germany, Mexico, India and across the UK. Now based in Bristol, Molly brings a passion for community engagement and creating work that can be accessible and enjoyed by all.

It was really great as it had the text and the meaning of ‘togetherness’ with all these different characters and figures that represents the local community and it was really nice to take that image, and I didn’t want to change it too much, try and honour that as much as I could in the design. So, I would have those figures and made them a little bit more blocky and added complementary patterns and tried to bring the energy of the drawing to life by adding more flex and vibrancy.

What I love about it is that it totally transforms a location, places that feel a little bit drab or buildings that need a bit more love, it’s a very effective way of injecting joy into the area. Seeing that transformation and the smiles and responses from people is just really nice. It makes art accessible for all which I think is so important and it doesn’t feel exclusive especially with this mural, having somebody’s design involved.

As a local resident of Goodmayes, I wanted to give back to my community. This project will be the first step to turning Goodmayes into a destination for architecture, art, commerce, cuisine, customs, geography, history, and people. With further developments coming into the area, it’s incredibly important that we continue to spotlight Goodmayes as a hub for local enterprise, a safe place to live and an area bustling with rich culture and leisure.
— Ajay Pabial, Managing Director and Founder of Art Clubbers CIC
I love this project because it’s about bringing other people together and this is what Spacehive and CIL is about. It’s about getting ideas from people like Ajay and then we saw the concept that came from Tahani which we all loved and coming to life today and that’s what we see across the road today. I want to see more of this in the borough! It’s transformed this road, I have driven past it thousands of times and you become oblivious to seeing it as it is but now it’s transformed it and its made a difference. It makes you feel happy just looking at it.

We need projects likes these as it’s not just about the council putting in money or Spacehive or CIL or people themselves it’s about bringing people together, who bring their skills together, or contributions from partners that developed this so that people value it. It’s not just done by somebody; it is done by everybody.
— Cllr Kam Rai, Deputy Leader of Redbridge Council & Labour Group
Brennan & Burch are proud to support Welcome to Goodmayes as the project will bring the community access to more art and give people more involvement in how their community looks. We have helped with Phase 1 by running a street art workshop for the local community and helping inspire residents to explore what the borough means to them through art. The venue being used for workshops/exhibition is a community hub and Art Clubbers are introducing the community to the venue.

Phase 2 will support young people and street artists along with making a real impact as people arrive at Goodmayes station. It is a good news story at a time when we really need positive and uplifting events.
